Travel: Freedom on a Beach in Hawaii (12/9)

December 9th
Travel: Where did you visit in 2011? Who did you travel with? What did you learn while you were there? Where do you hope to visit in 2012?

In January, I traveled to Hawaii. It was supposed to be a trip with my longtime boyfriend/virtual fiance, but it wasn't. Instead, I invited a friend who I hadn't seen in about five years to join me.

We were two girls with this enormously obnoxious maroon colored station wagon driving around the island looking for love, freedom, and all sorts of wonderful things.

It was not the top-down mustang or convertible I thought it would be, but it got us around. One day, we drove through pouring rain in an attempt to reach the North Shore. We grew anxious and after stopping at a Mexican food restaurant recommended by a colleague, we just drove toward sunshine.

Once we got close, we parked, and gleefully ran toward the untouched beach sand. It was, for a more than a moment, a indication of the magisterial beauty of this world.

By the time we were done enjoying the discovery of this untouched sand, we had traversed all over it -- running around like school girls.

As we left, we caught four surfers strolling to somewhere...
