Songs: A Thrill of Hope (12/5)

December 5th
Songs: By now, many radio stations are already playing Christmas and other holiday songs. What is one of your favorite holiday songs? What’s your favorite song this year - and why? If you feel like it, take a picture of the CD, or link to a YouTube version of the song so others can hear exactly why it’s meaningful, funny, or hopeful - or whatever it is for you.
In April, I curled up on the couch to watch the Academy of Country Music Awards. The announcer introduced Sara Evans and said it was her return to the music stage after a long hiatus following public and upsetting divorce.
As she started to perform “Stronger” I could’t help but feel as though I wrote the song. Its not exactly the happiest song, but it resonated with me far deeper than I thought any song would.

Here's Sara's performance:

Around the same time, I discovered Adele’s “Someone Like You” and I thought, at first, that would be the song defining my year, or my emotional experience. It took “Stronger” for me to realize I didn’t want someone like anyone - anymore. As Sara sings, I was “done with how it feels." I knew that I was done with how it felt, but I was, "telling myself I will be okay, even on my weakest days." She sang, "It doesn't happen overnight." I learned just how common the feelings I was working through, or afraid to face, and sometimes just staring at are.
They are two of my favorite songs this year for the emotional resonance they offer.
It may not be any surprise that one of my favorite Christmas songs is about hope.

As a believer in the meaning of Christmas, the song that cuts straight to my veins is “O Holy Night.” I can’t imagine anyone who doesn’t feel the desire, or the need for:
A thrill of hope, a weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh hear the angel voices!
Hope. Whether you’re religious or not, this song is about hope and something brighter on the horizon.
“O Holy Night” has been recorded by both religious and non-religious performers for decades. This is one of my favorite versions:
